New Mass Effect in the works
A long blog post from Yanick Roy, Studio Director at BioWare Montreal, gave a few more details about the new Mass Effect game that was announced to be in “early stages” just last week.
One of the key points seems to be that the new Mass Effect will be built on DICE’s Frostbite technology, just like another one of the company’s titles in development; Dragon Age III: Inquisition. Quoting that the new Mass Effect game will be “…enhanced by many of the systems that the Dragon Age III team has already spent a lot of time building“.
Yanick also writes that “…while it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both of the gameplay and story fronts.“. But furthermore that we can “…still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling.“.
Regarding the team developing the new addition to the series, the post divulges that it will be headed by the team in Montreal, who are “…proud, excited, and humbled to take on the responsibility for the next game.“. Additionally that they will “…>…continue to be supported by the Edmonton studio through the game’s development, working with and learning from them on some critical initiatives.”.
This news coming recently after Casey Hudson, confirmed to continue his role as the executive producer on the Mass Effect series, reached out to fans on twitter to ask what they would like to see in the next Mass Effect game.
The story may be over for Commander Shepard, as BioWare has stated previously, but the universe is rich and diverse, meaning essentially anything could be possible. They’ve also suggested that it would be a good idea to keep hold of those Shepard-based save files. Who knows, maybe we’ll get to see some of the previous cycles, the first contact war, or maybe something completely different! Ass kicking Hanars anyone?
Sadly, the blog post signs off by saying “We’re all looking forward to telling you more about this next Mass Effect game, but it’s probably going to be quite a while before you hear from us again.“. Thus demonstrating their excellent ability at dangling that bottle of Serrice Ice Brandy just far enough out of reach to keep us intrigued.
Time to share! Are you excited? What would you like to see? Or do you think the Mass Effect universe should contain itself to Commander Shepard’s story? Let us know in the comments section below!
