The year in gaming, 2010 edition
I hope everyone has had a very happy and heart warming Christmas with family and/or friends, and you didn’t sat at home or on the street alone. Also, I hope the best for all of you in the coming year. Look out for the anticipated games of 2011, that soon will arrive on the website.
This is the editorial teams break down of the games in 2010. From a bunch of great games to games that showed potential all the way to the ones that you should downright avoid with all the force you can manage. Enjoy the reading.
This is a game for the adult, who grew up with Mario Kart. This game surely doesn’t look like Mario, but the feel and experience is the same – just heavily upgraded.
This games depth in story and dialogues pulls this game up in the top. You simply can not get the full experience in just one playthrough.
Intense and scary. Get the experience of all your emotions – from frightened to scared, from sad to devastated, and from happy to excited. Great storyline and marvelous voice acting.
I had the tendency to stop breathe when I was underwater in this game – yes, it was that good! The one thing I wasn’t too happy about in this game goes for all 3D shooters; Opponents attacks me from behind.
Colorful and playful, the most creative minds in the gaming industry has been able to outdo themselves from last time. This is Super Mario Galaxy re-invented!
People call it Gran Theft Horse, Grand Theft Auto on Horseback, Grand Theft Auto in the Wild West… yeah, a beloved child has many names. An open world with a great story.
Witches isn’t always ugly – this one is beautiful. Be creative with the magic from her hands and spirit, and get ready for a few surprises.
The God of War series is back in business, and they are doing it damn good, mildly said. Fight against titans, and learn a bit about the Greek mythology.
A new interface and gaming experience, and well-made too. In this game you will experience how it is to be a detective – both the good and the bad side of things.
Best downloadable games
A simple, yet genius idea. Most of the times this is just a straight forward platformer, but no matter how experienced you are, you will encounter a few difficulty spots in this game. The atmosphere is intense, and there’s no game like it.
This is simply Micro Machines in dirt. The handling takes a while to get used to, but once you get a hang of it and make it to your advantage, you will rule the game.
It’s been a looooong time since a hard 2D platformer hit the street. And Super Meat Boy does it right. Simple graphics, funny ideas and wacky minds – and then you have to save your beloved princess.
Best free demo
Many people got into the beta (over 150.000 codes were given out, 50k from gamespot and everyone could invite up to three friends) and the beta was converted to a demo, once the game was released into the wild. This demo contained a good handful of tracks, modes and cars.
Best party games
Entertaining and challenging. Throwing a javelin or a bowling ball in the attempt of destroy your friends score isn’t new. But getting up on your feet and actually try to throw a non-existent javelin to see the javelin on screen is!
Seeing my brother get more excited over a game than I’ve seen for years is what pops this games up in this list. We sure had fun pulling worms out of an ugly rabbids teeth, and swing our hips to some great 80′s and 90′s music.
This games choreographs is an easy way to learn how to dance. At least it gives you a few tips for some cool moves that you can use on the dance floor down in the local night club.
I had this game for the Playstation 2, and I initially played it on the arcade cabinet, whenever I had the chance. It was a good choice to put this on Xbox Live Arcade. I might get this one at some point, just for the fun of it.
The time spender
Stab and get stabbed. That is Rome-rule.. erh, jungle-rule? maybe circle of life. Anywho, this multiplayer really eats up the hours. I’ve used way too many hours on it already, and I am NOT finished with this multiplayer… yet.
The overlooked one
I think this game release was just bad timing, looking at the contesters released around the same time. Maybe the demo was too big and people felt that they had played it enough and didn’t had to buy it, perhaps there wasn’t enough exposure of the game. People, whom have yet to play this game; get it!
Most inventive multiplayer
You have to locate your target by your compass, and kill he/she as fast and quiet as possible – but almost always, you will have to look over your shoulder, as you just might be pursued by another player.
Ride your horse, avoid fast bullets, shoot the hat off your opponents and participate in the wild west! This is Grand Theft Horse.
This game surprised me beyond any other games I’ve ever played. I expected this to be so simple, just some cuddling with a virtual pet and a story being told via cutscenes. I was very wrong – This game consists of so much more.
I never heard about this game until the day of release, and when I checked it out, I was a bit amazed. Crawling almost everywhere in the levels was a new experience for me. The game had it’s flaws, but it was still well worth my time playing this.
Could have been so much better
If this game just was a bit more polished – the clippings was avoided and the graphics was more round and detailed, I think that this game would have sky rocked through sales.
This game was over hyped, and it didn’t lived up to it – the reviews are the evidence. While the game is really good, the camera was too annoying at certain points. More active cutscenes and voiceacting could have made the game fan-ta-stic would have made the game more than a nominee as GOTY.
I was really disappointed with this game. The length was all right, considered it was a downloadable game, the difficulty was somewhat easy, but this can always be discussed, especially racing games.
While this game is fun to play, and works the way it should, Microsoft should have kept their promise and released it as a free, controllerbased racing game.
The ones I avoided all year
When I saw the first gameplay video, I knew that I should stay ten feet away from this game, and never put it in my Xbox, even though I got the game from a gamingevent I was attending to in the fall.
I tried the predecessor’s demo, and the game felt cheap, and the game price dropped fast and rapidly – the same happened with this game, and I am glad I didn’t fell for the low pricetag.
When I first heard about this game, I was intrigued, but wondered how it would work. Learning that the game would work with microphones, it would be too random that is was more based on luck than actually gambling with lies.
